Improving Water Quality

Key elements to the design of the Sunrise River Energy Station related to water include: 

• Conserving natural resources through the use of treated effluent from nearby wastewater treatment plants as the sole source of water for generation purposes; and
• Installation of a zero liquid discharge system such that no wastewater is discharged from the plant.

The result of this design is the Sunrise River Energy Station will improve local water quality in tributaries of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.  This will also include a reduction in phosphorus loading in Lake Pepin, for which it is currently impaired.
