Supporting Renewable Energy in MinnesotaThe Sunrise River Energy Station will support Minnesota’s requirements for increased renewable energy. Minnesota enacted legislation in 2007 mandating a Renewable Energy Standard for electric utilities.
The majority of renewable energy in Minnesota will come from wind generation, which is an intermittent resource. The increased integration of wind generation to the electric transmission system will necessitate new natural gas-fired generation that provides greater operating flexibility. As identified by Xcel Energy in its most recent Resource Plan. Resource Plan, this operating flexibility will “avoid instability during non-peak hours when the energy from wind and base load plants can exceed [Xcel’s] demand needs, or during periods when the energy produced by wind can rise or fall rapidly due to wind fluctuations… the intermittent nature of wind requires [Xcel] to have resources that can respond to these generation changes on a minute-by-minute basis to maintain system reliability.” Xcel goes on to state that “Natural Gas serves as the backup that reliably balances the wind on [its] system.”
