How We Produce ElectricityThe Sunrise River Energy Station is planned to include a combination of “simple cycle” and “combined cycle” generating units, both relying on natural gas as a primary fuel.
Simple Cycle Process Illustration The simple cycle units are typically referred to as “peaking” units and will be operated primarily during hours when energy demand is at its highest - or “peak” hours (e.g. approximately 10% of the time). These units offer substantial operational flexibility with the ability to startup in short periods of time and ramp up/down to be able to quickly respond to changes in energy demand.
Combined Cycle Process Illustration The combined cycle units are typically referred to as “intermediate” units and will be operated generally during daytime hours when energy demand tends to rise (e.g. approximately 30-50% of the time). The combined cycle technology adds a heat recovery steam generator and steam cycle to produce additional electricity from the waste heat produced by the combustion turbine. This process is highly efficient with the capability to turn on and off on a daily basis.
